I’m a little late getting this post out of my adventure with Mama. I figure, hey better late than never! (Actually I have had it saved to draft for a few months but just hadn’t shared it with you yet.) So, let’s just pretend today is Mother’s Day and you are reading this. 😆
So, I asked Mama what she would like to do on this very special day of the year and the next thing I knew out of my mouth came “How about blueberry picking?” To that, she responded “Oh, that’s a great idea!”
We decided to go to the same place we had picked blueberries at last year but on the way there we got to chatting (as women do) and low and behold I took a wrong turn and was on the wrong road! Oops! We weren’t that far off track so while we were getting on the right road I saw another sign that said U-Pick Blueberries so we decided to pull in and check it out. Driving down the long dirt road to the blueberry fields we finally make a decision to go back to the place we went to last year.
Upon arrival at our “old place” we could see there weren’t many blueberries to pick. Speaking with the nice lady working there we found out that their picking season was coming to an end a month early this year. So, back to the car we went and again headed back to the first place that we stopped at by mistake. Don’t judge 😎
It felt like deja vu once we arrived, like I had been there farreachranch.com before picking blueberries but wasn’t sure. Thankfully, they had portable toilets on the premises so I quickly parked the car. I was only gone for maybe 5 minutes and when I got back Mama was in the driver’s seat and was backing the car around in the opposite direction than I had parked it. I asked her what she was doing and she said “Oh, I was just moving the car so people could get by.” First of all we were in a field of miles and miles of blueberries and there was plenty of room for people to get by if in fact there happened to be some sort of parade happening by while I was in the bathroom for less than 5 minutes but hey I guess it’s always good to be prepared. 🙄
Driving down the road for about a minute, we arrive at the little farm stand set up. From there we were both warmly greeted, handed a bucket and told where the sweetest blueberries were located. Off we went Mama heading to the left and I to the right. At that moment I was thinking to myself, I hope I can find her later because some of the bushes are pretty high, envisioning myself wandering around the blueberry fields all night trying to find her.
I found a great spot to pick where the blueberries were large and juicy. I started off just like I have always picked berries, one for the bucket and one for me. 😀 After about 5 minutes of that I decided I had better start focusing on putting the berries into the bucket or I would be there for hours. Being such a lovely day I couldn’t help leaning back enjoying the quiet, the sun shining down on my body and being thankful for this memorable day and for the tons and tons of beautiful blueberries surrounding me.
After an hour or so my bucket was soo full that I decided to go find Mama. I looked out over the fields to see if I could spot her. And…of course not! That would be too easy! So, off I went up and down the long rows trying to find her. Finally, I saw her way on the opposite side of the fields from where I was. I thought about yelling to her but then I decided against it. By then, there were several other people picking berries. I decided to suck it up and make the trek over to where she was.
Mama was happy to see me and was very much enjoying herself, I could tell. She still had a ways to go to finish filling her bucket so I decided to help her. I told her about where I had been picking and showed her the large berries I had found. She hadn’t found any berries that big so she wanted me to take her there. After picking for a littler while longer in my spot her bucket was now full. So off we went to the farm stand to pay for the berries.
We weren’t really sure how many pounds of blueberries we had picked. When they weighed them we had both picked 6 pounds! 12 pounds total! Woo Hoo! That’s alotta blueberries!
Later that day my sister came over to visit. I was telling her about our blueberry picking expedition and where we ended up. She said, “Yes, remember that’s where you and I went last year.” (That explained why I had that deja vu moment when we first got there.)
All in all it was a wonderful day and I am so happy Mama enjoyed her special day.
XOXO Sharon
